PM Surya Ghar Yojana Bihar — Complete Subsidy Guide

Everything you need to know about getting up to ₹78,000 solar subsidy from the central government — explained simply for Bihar residents.

What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a flagship scheme launched by the Government of India in February 2024. The goal is to install rooftop solar systems on 1 crore homes across India by 2027, and Bihar is one of the priority states under this scheme.

The scheme provides a direct financial subsidy to homeowners who install solar panels on their rooftops. The money comes directly from the central government into your bank account — there is no middleman, no dealer commission, and no paperwork hassle if you use an approved installer.

For Bihar residents, this is combined with additional support from BREDA (Bihar Renewable Energy Development Agency) for certain categories like BPL families, farmers, and government employees.

How Much Subsidy Will You Get?

The subsidy amount depends on the size of the solar system you install:

System SizeCentral Govt SubsidyMonthly Units GeneratedApprox Total Cost Before Subsidy
1 kW₹30,00090–120 units₹65,000 – ₹90,000
2 kW₹60,000180–240 units₹1.1 – ₹1.5 lakh

5 kW₹78,000450–600 units₹2.5 – ₹3 lakh

* The maximum subsidy is capped at ₹78,000 regardless of system size above 3kW. Above 3kW, the additional panels are at your full cost.

Step-by-Step Application Process in Bihar

01
Register on pmsuryagarh.gov.in

Visit the official portal and register using your BSPHCL consumer number (your electricity account number). You will need your Aadhaar number and mobile number linked to Aadhaar.

02
Choose an Approved Installer

After registration, the portal will show you MNRE-empanelled solar companies in your district. You can request quotes from 2–3 companies listed there. Do not choose a company not on this list if you want the subsidy.

03
Get Installation Done

Once you choose a company, they will survey your rooftop, design the system, and install the panels. A standard 3kW installation typically takes 1–3 days.

04
Net Meter Application

The installer will apply for a net metering connection from BSPHCL. This allows you to sell excess solar electricity back to the grid. BSPHCL approval takes 2–6 weeks in Bihar.

05
DISCOM Inspection

A BSPHCL/DISCOM official will visit your home to inspect the installation. This is mandatory. Make sure your system is properly installed before this visit.

06
Subsidy Credited to Your Bank

After successful inspection, the subsidy amount is transferred directly to your bank account within 30 days. No middle-man, no cash — directly from the government.

Bihar-Specific: BREDA Schemes

In addition to the central PM Surya Ghar scheme, the Bihar government runs its own solar programs through BREDA (Bihar Renewable Energy Development Agency). Key ones to know:

PM-KUSUM Scheme for Farmers: Bihar farmers can get solar-powered irrigation pumps (2HP to 10HP) with up to 90% subsidy. This is separate from the rooftop scheme. Contact your Block Agriculture Office or BREDA district office.

Solar Street Lighting: Gram Panchayats in Bihar can apply for free solar street lights under the state government's rural electrification scheme.

BREDA District Offices: BREDA has offices in all major district headquarters. They can help you understand local schemes, verify approved installers, and resolve any issues with your subsidy application.

Common Questions About Solar Subsidy in Bihar

Can I apply for subsidy on my own without a solar company?
No. The subsidy process requires your chosen solar company to register the installation on the PM Surya Ghar portal after they complete the work. You cannot complete the technical parts without them. That is why choosing an MNRE-empanelled company is critical.
How long does subsidy take to arrive in Bihar?
After DISCOM inspection, it typically takes 30–60 days for the subsidy to be credited. Some Bihar residents report delays of up to 90 days due to administrative backlog. Keep following up with your installer and BSPHCL if it takes longer.
Will my BSPHCL connection be affected after installing solar?
No. After net metering is installed, your grid connection stays active. You simply get a bidirectional meter that tracks how much you consume from the grid and how much you export. You pay only for what you use minus what you generate.
Is there any income limit for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
There is no income limit for the central PM Surya Ghar scheme. Any homeowner with a valid electricity connection can apply regardless of income. However, some state-level BREDA schemes are specifically for BPL or economically weaker families.
